Docker

the moat is real

13 years 153 days and counting

Solomon Hykes, PyCon 2013 demo. The whale outlived the hype cycle.

Why it lasted

  • A Dockerfile is a unit of thought. Kubernetes did not replace that noun.
  • Docker Hub plus the desktop app kept developers even after the orchestration wars.
  • The company stumbled. The format did not.

Times it almost ended

  • The 2019-2021 company near-death and the Kubernetes takeover of the narrative. Compose files kept getting written.
  • Licensing changes on Docker Desktop. People complained and paid, or moved to Colima, and still typed docker.

What would finish it

  • A build/run UX that is not Docker and is the default on every laptop. Podman wants this. Laptops still say docker.
